Formerly used only for cultivation, and a transit route for farmers and the indigenous Wiwa community, a group of families and Wiwas decided to open the route into the spectacular Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta for tourists so that they may know and hopefully understand the beauty and the way of life in these mountains.
Keen to share their paradise with others, they will show you the secrets that they keep in the Sierra Nevada, its biodiversity, its natural and crystalline water, and wildlife that you will see all around you.
Keen to share their paradise with others, your trip will be with happy and friendly people who had the privilege of being born in this natural wonder. To reach the most beautiful places, however, you always have to make a great effort. In these walks you can travel between 16 to 64 km (2 to 4 days of travel respectively), with long steep slopes (a gain of up to 1,200 meters in 1 day) between fields of grass, forests and mountains, and for this it is necessary to be in good physical and mental condition. On the other hand, at the end of each day we will be welcome, we will eat and sleep in the houses of the peasant families that started this beautiful project, with them we will live a unique experience, and we will make a cultural exchange.
It is the easist options, 12 km (approx), the first day descending from a height of 1,400 meters to 990 meters, this through a tertiary road that passes between forests and crops to a small village of peasants where We will spend the rest of the day. The next day, very early, we will visit El Chorrerón waterfall, walk along the river and then return to the main road using an alternating trail of 4 km that will take us from 990 meters high to 1,500 meters high.
With about 46 km, this option has the most panoramic points, since many parts of the road pass through open areas at very high points of the mountains. The first day is a 14 km hike, from where we will begin at 950 meters high; At 10 km and after reaching 2,200 meters, we will have lunch and then continue for 4 km downhill to 1,600 meters where we will spend the night. The second day is a walk of 7 km, 5 km downhill and 2 km uphill, from 1,600 meters high to 800 meters high. The third day will be a walk of approximately 27 km, most of that distance is through the territory of a native community called Wiwa, one of the four native cultures of Sierra Nevada. Our final destination, a town called La Tagua, is 1,600 meters high.
This is the most difficult option but no less interesting. Day 1 is just a 5 km warm-up to the peasants' house where we will prepare for day 2, a walk of approximately 26 km along a path that goes through the most wooded heart of the mountains, where you will live and breathe the wild nature of the Sierra Nevada. The last two days of this option follow the same route as the last two days of option 3, with some of the incredible views offered by the Sierra Nevada.
The farming and indigenous families are a part of, and contributed to, the creation of Native Experience Expeditions, for their part, by choosing this experience you will be contributing to the development of a community and the protection of the environment of a region; On the part of the enterprising peasant community, we will give you all to have a great experience, since you can do this expedition only with your partner / companion or travel group (unless another group of people program their expedition in a very nearby) and enjoy an exclusive trip, you can also enjoy the typical food of the region during your stay in the houses of the peasants.
Do not miss this opportunity to experience a unique and unforgettable tour, away from the large groups and industrial tourism of other tours in the Sierra Nevada.
